"In play therapy toys are viewed as the child's words and play as the child's language" Landreth
Play for hope therapy helps children who are hurting on the inside to think about and manage difficult feelings. Children find it much easier to express their feelings through play, rather than by talking. By interacting with the play therapist in the playroom, the child will have the chance to do this in a safe and neutral environment. The child is often better equipped to address their problems once the play therapist helps the child think about, explore and understand their feelings both past and present.
Play for hope therapy allows the child to communicate in their own way at their own developmental level. Through carefully selected toys, the child is given the means to express their feelings and life experiences through the metaphor of play.
Play therapy was developed in the 1920's and has being growing and developing ever since. It has been shown to be an effective intervention for children who have experienced;

any form of abuse
neglect
domestic violence
parental drug or alcholol abuse
witnessing a traumatic incident
and or are displaying behaviours such as;
aggressive behaviour
anxiety issues
low self esteem
poor peer relationships
